keluh kenyaman

AKHIRNYA!!!

title : a sigh of comfort

Finally!!! The legislative campaign period is over!

It feels like enjoying a cup of warm cappuccino somewhere hill-side in the inland of Italy with the wind breezing gently and accompanied by a girl friend.

Satpol PP already started to take down and dismantled most of the attributes of the candidates and party that has been visually polluting every corner of Jakarta for quite a while. There was no mercy for them, starting with the giant baliho 'till the flags that were fluttering on a piece of bamboo and put in the middle of the road that often endangers me while I ride my motorcycle. But it seems that the posters has not been cleaned even though they're the most polluting and destructing public facilities.

And after this election period, and the millions of rupiah that were spent for promotional items of the party and candidates, I have yet to remember the names of those candidates. I remember their faces, but forgot the names. Besides, they rarely display themselves in public and didn't persuade the people much.

One candidate sent me a letter through mail asking for my vote in the election. He's running for public office of South Jakarta from the Demokrat party. I thought he was going to give me money inside the envelope or at least something I can use, but it turns out there was only a piece of letter, three name cards, and a bookmark. The title of the letter was "Sweet Demokrat" (it's an Indonesian election, why should he use words in English?). The use of words in the letter wasn't Indonesian-standardly correct either. And I don't know why, but he felt it was important to acknowledge that his zodiac was cancer.

It seems that every step was taken to gain support. Instead of proving their performance and competency in the field during the campaign period, the candidates felt it was more necessary to spend their funding into posters and etc. They say it was more effective and efficient, or are they just lazy and wanted instant results? Even though they have a Masters degree from an outer-country university, it does not say much about their work experience and ethics.

In my opinion, a candidate should do more social work for the people, be more involved with real issues inside the public to prove themselves. And their efforts were shown far before the campaign period and they were done sincere, not only to gain votes during the campaign period.

But anyways, we're still a developing country (more excuses). Finally, a little sigh of relieve even though the election period is not entirely over. At least traffic won't be as packed and the sights of Jakarta will be better to look at.
